St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services: A Shelter Fur All

EVERY SINGLE ANIMAL brought in to the St. Tammany Department of Animal Services finds shelter–whether a stray, an injured animal picked up by a good Samaritan, an animal picked up by an Animal Control Officer or an animal surrendered by its owner. In 2019, this Shelter took in over 4,000 animals.

From the moment animals are brought in, the dedicated staff at the shelter works toward one goal–to see a day when animals will not suffer because of abuse and neglect, and that every pet born into our community is assured a good home and loving care its entire life, all while protecting our citizens from the dangers and nuisances caused by uncontrolled animals.

They also work to educate citizens of St. Tammany Parish on the importance of pet care and the essential need to spay or neuter pets to prevent overpopulation, in part, through partnerships with local veterinarians to offer low-cost spay/neuter programs.

The Department of Animal Services has a robust foster-to-adopt program where individuals foster animals who would otherwise live in the shelter, until they’re ready to be fully adopted. This program is a welcome companion to walk-in adoptions and placement in forever homes through partnerships with credible, caring rescue groups. All animals who are finally adopted from the St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter are spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. So far, in 2020, over 700 animals have been rehomed.

You too can help Animal Services in their mission. Consider adoption if you are looking for a new four-legged member of your family. You will give a shelter animal a forever home, help reduce the shelter population and gain a loyal companion for years to come.

Adoptable animals may be viewed at www.stpgov/pets. For more information about services offered at Animal Services, please call 985-809-0183. Follow Animal Service on Facebook at facebook.com/animalservices.
