Northshore Humane Society, which serves the neglected and abandoned animals of the Northshore region, is one of Louisiana’s largest 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organizations. While many families think of NHS when looking for a new puppy or kitten, there are also many amazing senior pets looking for a true second chance at life who may be in greater need of saving. Older pets are often overlooked for younger, cuter, more adoptable animals, but we know their value! We also know their struggles. Senior animals living in a shelter have most likely led a tough life. Many will have been in a loving home before, only to be brought to a shelter when situations change, or they lose their families.
One of the many benefits of adopting an older pet is that they often require very little training. Teaching a puppy to potty outdoors or not to chew your expensive heels can be exhausting work. Luckily, many senior animals have already been through basic training and are simply looking to please you any way they can. Another benefit is that there are no surprises when it comes to their personalities or sizes since they are no longer growing.
At NHS, we have a program dedicated to these older, homeless dogs and cats. With our “Seniors for Seniors” program, citizens 65 years or older in our community can adopt a senior shelter animal at a minimal cost. Not only will adopters of animals seven years or older receive waived adoption fees, they will also receive both a free annual exam for the remainder of the pet’s life, as well as 10% off our clinic services for ALL their pets—even ones that aren’t seniors or adopted from a shelter. Come by our shelter or visit www.NorthshoreHumane.org to save a senior life TODAY!
