There are many versions of rum punch throughout the Caribbean and in New Orleans…the Hurricane of course. Rum punch does need to be a sweet red insipid concoction guaranteed to give you a headache. Use the standard formula below from the islands or my variation and you will be pleasantly surprised.
1 of sour
2 of sweet
3 of strong
4 of weak
Mardi Gras Punch
- 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
- 10-12 strawberries roughly chopped and muddled (Many recipes add a little grenadine or strawberry juice for the red and sweet)
- 2 cups dark rum
- 1 cup white rum
- 2 cups pineapple or a combination of regular pineapple and coconut pineapple juice
- 2 cups of orange juice
- Add a few dashes of Angostura bitters if you like
Mix all of the ingredients in a punch bowl or pitcher. Garnish with sliced strawberries, limes, and oranges. Serve over ice and “laissez les bon temps rouler!”
