Funtime, Summertime in The City of Hammond

I am proud to be the Mayor of Hammond for so many reasons. In May, we were awarded the “Cleanest City in the State” for the 13th year in a row, making Hammond the city that has won the contest more than any other municipality. This is a year-long effort that is achieved through city staff and many volunteers planting new flowers and trees, educating kids about litter and recycling and picking up litter in every corner of the city.

If you haven’t visited Hammond’s downtown recently, I encourage you to do so. Come on a Saturday to the farmer’s market and enjoy live music and delicious food from one of our 26 locally-owned restaurants. Hot August Night is on Friday, August 23, with a night full of live music, art, wine and beer tastings, special retail sales and kids’ activities. Visit the historic Columbia Theater for a play or concert. Visit the Hammond Regional Arts Center for the Brews Arts Festival on September 27 and enjoy their Playing the Staircase concerts on the last Friday of each month. There’s a reason that Hammond was named one of the top 10 downtowns in America, and we want to be sure you experience it.

Need to keep the kids busy? Bring them to the Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center or enroll them in the STEM camp at the Tangipahoa African American Heritage Museum.  And finally, don’t miss Hammond’s Light up the Sky with fireworks, food and music in Zemurray Park on July 4. Hammond in summer is the perfect place to be!

Pete Panepinto, Mayor of Hammond
